NYC Ferry Fire Sparks Evacuation
A New York Waterway ferry named "Father Mychal Judge" caught fire on the Hudson River near Jersey City on August 29th, 2024. Approximately 37 passengers were evacuated to safety after the fire broke out around 4:40 p.m.
The fire was extinguished quickly, and thankfully, no injuries were reported.
Passenger Describes Terrifying Experience
One passenger, Cary Broder, described the chaotic scene, saying people remained calm despite being "obviously scared." He said, "I looked behind me, and there were orange flames shooting out of the back of the boat. I was fairly certain we were going to have to jump into the river, actually."
Broder, who commutes by ferry daily, said the incident wouldn't stop him from using the ferry.
Quick Response and Safe Evacuation
First responders transported passengers to safety on another vessel. The ferry boat was then taken back to port. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of safety precautions and the quick response of emergency services.
UPDATE: New York Waterway is investigating the cause of the fire.
