Olympic Gold Medalist Tamirat Tola to Defend New York City Marathon Title

Olympic Champion Returns to Defend NYC Marathon Title

Tamirat Tola, the reigning New York City Marathon champion and 2024 Olympic gold medalist, has announced he will defend his title at the November 3rd race. Tola, who set a new course record last year, is aiming to become the second athlete to win the New York City Marathon after winning an Olympic title.
"The hilly course and crowds in Paris definitely prepared me well for the bridges and spectators in New York, where maybe I can go even faster this year," said Tola, eager to capitalize on his Olympic success.
Tough Competition Awaits
Tola will face stiff competition from Bashir Abdi, the silver medalist at the Paris Olympics. Abdi also holds a bronze medal from the Tokyo Olympics and the 2022 World Championships. Other contenders include past winners Evans Chebet and Albert Korir.
Despite the strong field, Tola remains confident, stating "I trust the training that the coach is giving me" to prepare for another major event.
Obiri Aims for Repeat Victory in Women's Race

In the women's race, defending champion Hellen Obiri will be seeking her second consecutive New York City Marathon win. Obiri, who won bronze at the Paris Olympics, already boasts victories at the Boston Marathon in both 2023 and 2024.
"I have been racing very well on the roads in the U.S., and I hope I can have another good day that sees me in contention," said Obiri, highlighting her strong form.
Obiri will face a strong challenge from Sharon Lokedi, the 2022 marathon champion and bronze medalist at last year's New York City Marathon. Dakotah Lindwurm, who finished 12th at the 2024 Olympic marathon, will also compete.
