Olympic Chaos: Sabotage Strikes France's Vast Rail Network, Leaving Thousands Stranded

Olympic Chaos: Sabotage Strikes France's Vast Rail Network
The opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics was marred by travel chaos after a coordinated series of arson attacks targeted France's sprawling rail network. Saboteurs struck far outside the capital, disrupting travel for hundreds of thousands of people.
Experts say the French rail network, with its 28,000 kilometers of track and 15,000 daily trains, is simply too vast to secure every inch. The attackers strategically targeted specific locations, causing maximum disruption.
Julien Joly, a transportation expert at the Wavestone consulting firm, stated that while attacks on the network are common, the scale and coordination of this incident were unprecedented. He emphasized that the vastness of the network makes it impossible to guarantee a 24-hour security presence everywhere.
This attack highlights the vulnerability of even the most sophisticated infrastructure, raising concerns about the security of critical national assets during major events like the Olympics.
