While the NYPD hasn't confirmed weapon capabilities, the manufacturer markets the Skydio X10 as "combat-ready," boasting features like night vision and adaptable attachments.
The Skydio X10's capabilities include:
- Long-range observation: 1km range to identify threats.
- Night vision
- Modular design: Adaptable attachments for various situations.
Real-World Applications
The drones have proven invaluable in various situations, including:
- High-speed chases
- Missing persons cases
- Emergency rescues (e.g., a child hanging from a window)
- Responding to major incidents like garage collapses and fires.
Importantly, the NYPD has stated these drones do not utilize facial recognition technology.
The NYPD drone program, initiated in 2018 with 14 drones, has significantly expanded in size and operational scope.
