NYPD Commissioner Under Fire: Councilman Demands Resignation After Federal Raids
NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban Faces Calls to Resign After Federal Raids
The NYPD is facing turmoil following federal raids on the offices and homes of several top officials in Mayor Eric Adams' administration. Sources revealed that the US Attorney issued search warrants for the cellphones of Commissioner Caban and other NYPD leaders, along with an evidence preservation letter instructing the department not to delete any electronic files.
This investigation may be more widespread than initially thought, with evidence being collected from the Verizon building near One Police Plaza, home to Deputy Mayor Philip Banks' office. Banks, along with other members of the mayor's inner circle, including Schools Chancellor David Banks, his fiance First Deputy Mayor Sheena Wright, and mayoral advisor Timothy Pearson, have had their homes raided as part of the federal inquiry.
Councilman Calls for Caban to Resign
City Councilman Robert Holden, a long-time NYPD supporter, has publicly called for Commissioner Caban to step down. Holden believes the current situation casts a "deep shadow" over the police department and undermines public trust in the NYPD.
"We have to have confidence he's staying within the law. He sets an example for the whole department," Holden stated.
The investigation remains ongoing, and no charges have been filed. The US Attorney and FBI have declined to comment on the nature of the investigation. Mayor Adams has maintained that he is unaware of any wrongdoing by his staff and has insisted on allowing the legal process to run its course.
Further Investigations and Reactions
While a Bronx nightclub owned by Caban's twin brother has been shut down by city marshals, it's unclear if this action is directly related to the federal investigation.
Governor Kathy Hochul, when asked about Commissioner Caban's potential resignation, stated that it is not her decision to make but expressed confidence in the NYPD's ability to function despite the current situation.
