NYPD Commissioner Caban Under Fire: Is He Out? Twin Brother's Role in Investigation Adds Heat

Caban's Future with NYPD Uncertain Amidst Federal Investigation

New York City Police Commissioner Edward Caban's future with the NYPD is shrouded in uncertainty following a federal corruption investigation that has also ensnared his twin brother. Sources close to the situation claim Caban will resign in the coming days, but the commissioner has vehemently denied these rumors, labeling them as "false."

Mayor Eric Adams, however, has declined to guarantee Caban's continued leadership of the nation's largest police department, stating that "nothing in life is guaranteed."

The investigation focuses on allegations that Caban's brother, James, acted as a fixer for Manhattan restaurants and nightclubs, smoothing over any issues they might have had with the police. The federal raid last week, which involved the confiscation of Caban's cellphones, has raised serious questions about his ability to continue in his role.

Pressure Mounts for Caban to Step Down

City Council Member Robert Holden, a longtime supporter of the NYPD, believes Caban should resign, arguing that the investigation casts a "deep shadow" over the police department. Arlo Devlin-Brown, former chief of the Public Corruption Unit in the Manhattan U.S. Attorney's Office, echoes this sentiment, suggesting that Caban's continued presence could damage relations between federal prosecutors and the NYPD.

The Scope of the Federal Probe

Devlin-Brown highlighted the significance of the federal raid, stating that the seizure of electronics from high-level police officials indicates the investigation is "pretty advanced." The investigation's reach extends beyond Caban, with sources revealing that electronics were also taken from at least 10 other NYPD officials, including commanding officers in Midtown and Chelsea, areas known for their bustling nightlife.

While the investigation continues, the future of Edward Caban and his role as NYPD commissioner remains a source of intense speculation and debate.
