NYC's Top Lawyer Nominee Drops Out After Heated City Council Hearing
Randy Mastro, Mayor Eric Adams' nominee for the city's top lawyer position, has withdrawn his bid after facing strong opposition from City Council members.
In a letter sent to Mayor Adams on Tuesday, Mastro expressed his frustration with the council's hearing, which he described as "anything but fair." He stated that he was "denied the opportunity to respond" to council members who "grilled me for eight-and-a-half straight hours, reading speeches off of prepared scripts."
The decision comes just two days before the full council was set to vote on Mastro's nomination. It became clear after the hearing that the administration didn't have enough votes to confirm him, according to reports.
Mayor Adams expressed disappointment in a statement, stating that politics had "seeped into this process" and would deprive New Yorkers of a "qualified candidate." He thanked Mastro for his willingness to serve the city.
This situation highlights the challenging political landscape in NYC and the complex process of appointing key officials.
