NYC's Stinky Summer: Heatwave Turns City into a Giant, Rotting Garbage Dump

NYC's Stinkiest Summer in Years: Blame the Heatwave
New York City is experiencing its stinkiest summer in years, with complaints about odor soaring to record levels. Three heatwaves, coupled with record-breaking humidity, have created a perfect storm for simmering street trash, leading to extra-repulsive smells throughout the city.
Since May 1st, there have been over 3,756 calls to 311 about smells β more than any other year since 2010, except for 2022 when street cleaning rules were relaxed due to the pandemic. This is a significant increase from the 3,619 odor complaints logged during the same period last year.
Manhattan is the stinkiest borough, accounting for 33% of the complaints, followed by Brooklyn and Queens with 23.8% each.
Why the Stink?
The high humidity is the key culprit. It diffuses odor molecules, making the air soupy and allowing rotting food to dissolve into pungent gas. This creates a perfect environment for bacterial growth, turning garbage trucks into walking stink bombs that can spread their foul scent for blocks.
The Department of Sanitation has denied that there is more trash on the streets this year, attributing the increase in smell to the humidity and heat. They claim that containerization programs have actually reduced the amount of trash left on the curb.
Despite these claims, New Yorkers are suffering through the stink, with many describing the city as a big, musty sauna. The smell has been compared to a disgusting cocktail of garbage, sewage, and vomit, leaving many grossed out and wanting to throw up.
