Farewell to NYC's Outdoor Dining Sheds
The temporary outdoor dining structures that saved countless NYC restaurants during the pandemic are being removed. A Friday deadline marks the end of an era for many eateries that relied on these structures for survival.
Mixed Feelings About the Removal
While some see the removal as a necessary step, others lament the loss of these lifelines. Drew Parker notes that while the sheds served a purpose, they also created hazards and occupied parking spaces. Restaurant owner Jeremy Wladis agrees that the program, which temporarily waived certain regulations, was essential for many businesses, and he's preparing to remove his final structure by the deadline.
The Future of Outdoor Dining
Though the sheds are disappearing, outdoor dining isn't. Starting April 1st, restaurants can reapply for permits, but with stricter guidelines. New structures will have to be smaller, without sides, and easily assembled and disassembled.
A Lifeline and a Symbol of Resilience
The program initially supported over 13,000 restaurants. The Department of Transportation received about 1,400 applications for roadway dining permits. While the sheds are going away, they remain a symbol of the resilience and adaptability of New York City's restaurant industry during a challenging time.
