NYC's Next Mayor? Jumaane Williams Could Take Over If Eric Adams Resigns
Who is Jumaane Williams?
With NYC Mayor Eric Adams facing federal bribery charges, some officials are calling for his resignation. If Adams steps down, NYC Public Advocate Jumaane Williams would become acting mayor.
Williams first held the Public Advocate position in 2019 after winning a special election to replace Letitia James, who became New York Attorney General. He is known as an outspoken mental health advocate, and has openly discussed his personal struggles with Tourette's syndrome and ADHD.
In 2022, Williams ran for governor, participating in CBS New York's Democratic primary debate. He was elected to the New York City Council in 2010, representing District 45 in Brooklyn.
The Role of the Public Advocate
The Office of the Public Advocate was established by the New York City Council in 1993 to act as a "watchdog" over city government on behalf of residents. The Public Advocate assists with complaints and inquiries about government services and regulations, helping thousands of New Yorkers annually.
The Public Advocate is a non-voting member of the City Council but can introduce and co-sponsor bills. Williams would be the city's fifth public advocate, following in the footsteps of James, Bill de Blasio, Betsy Gotbaum and Mark Green.
