NYC's New Pizza Box Trash Cans: A Battle Against Rats & a Feast for Your Eyes

NYC's War on Rats Gets a Pizza-Themed Weapon: Pizza Box Trash Cans
New York City is stepping up its fight against the notorious rat population with a unique and eye-catching solution: pizza box-specific trash cans. The colorful red-and-white cans, reminiscent of classic NYC pizza shops, are being rolled out across parks, aiming to reduce trash overflow and the rodents attracted to it.

The first pizza box trash can was installed in Central Park in May, and the Central Park Conservancy reports a successful trial. They've seen less jammed trash bins, less surrounding litter, and more recycled cardboard.
Where to Spot NYC's Pizza Box Trash Cans
These unique receptacles are now available in six locations across the five boroughs:
- Bronx: Loreto Playground
- Brooklyn: Saratoga Park
- Manhattan: Father Demo Square
- Queens: Sobelsohn Playground
- Staten Island: Jennifer's Playground
This initiative is just one part of Mayor Eric Adams's comprehensive plan to tackle the city's rat problem. He's also hosting the inaugural National Rat Summit from Sept. 18 to 19, bringing together experts to discuss solutions.
So next time you're enjoying a slice in the park, be sure to toss your pizza box in the designated receptacle β it's not just good for the environment, it's good for the city's ongoing battle against rats.
