NYC's Mental Health Crisis: Helping Newly Arrived Migrants
The mental health of asylum-seekers coming to New York City has been overshadowed by immediate needs like food, shelter, and clothing. However, the demand for mental health services is growing as more migrants arrive.
Addressing the Mental Health Needs of Migrants
Dr. Theodore Long, senior vice president of ambulatory care and population health for NYC Health + Hospitals, stresses the importance of mental health in this crisis. He highlights the trauma migrants experience both in their home countries and during their journeys, emphasizing the urgent need for mental health care upon arrival.
The Adams administration has developed a plan to address the influx of migrants, including enrollment in health insurance and health care appointments through a referral process.
The Roosevelt Hotel Arrival Center
Since May 2023, the Roosevelt Hotel has served as a one-stop shop for medical care for asylum-seekers. It provides health screenings for diseases, case management services, and referrals for legal services. Mental health screenings are conducted for migrants aged 12 and above using the Patient Health Questionnaire. Those who screen positive are connected to a social worker for assessment and care planning.
Mental Health Services for Youth
The Department of Education and the Department of Youth and Community Development do not track immigration status or country of origin for migrant youth. As a result, mental health services are not specifically tailored for them. However, school-based mental health clinics and supplemental health support services are available.
The New York Foundling, a nonprofit organization, provides mental health services to 22 schools and operates four foster care clinics and a community clinic in Harlem. They emphasize the longer-lasting and more severe mental health symptoms observed in migrant children due to the stressors they face.
Challenges and Solutions
Several challenges exist in providing mental health services to migrants, including language barriers, distance, and the stigma surrounding mental health. Telehealth services are being expanded through a $9 million initiative to address distance barriers. Organizations like The New York Foundling are educating students and families about mental health and coping mechanisms.
While the city partners with mental health clinics to address immediate needs, long-term counseling services are still limited. Referral processes are in place for those requiring ongoing support.
