NYC's 'Market of Sweethearts' Crackdown: State Troopers Join NYPD to Fight Crime and Prostitution

State Troopers Deployed to NYC's 'Market of Sweethearts' to Fight Crime and Prostitution

Governor Kathy Hochul has sent in New York State troopers to help the NYPD clean up a crime-ridden stretch of Roosevelt Avenue in Queens, known as the "Market of Sweethearts." This notorious strip has been plagued by prostitution, sex trafficking, and illegal street vendors, with residents and business owners pleading for help.

The troopers were seen gathering with local cops along Roosevelt Avenue near 83rd and 84th streets, ready to patrol the area. NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Operations Kaz Daughty was also on the scene, highlighting the importance of this mission.

A Long-Standing Problem

This isn't the first time authorities have tried to crack down on the "Market of Sweethearts." Previous raids have had little long-term effect, with brothels and illegal vendors popping back up almost immediately after being shut down.

Local leaders are hopeful that this increased law enforcement presence will finally bring about lasting change. The Let’s Improve Roosevelt Avenue Coalition, which has been pushing for state trooper intervention, expressed gratitude for the additional resources.

The Problem in Numbers

The "Market of Sweethearts" has gained notoriety for its high rates of crime and illegal activity. In January, police raided and shut down a dozen brothels in the area, citing "inhumane conditions." In September, a 24-hour brothel was padlocked, labeled as "the worst of the worst."

The Post has previously reported on the involvement of migrant gangs in sex trafficking and the sale of stolen goods in illegal street markets along the avenue. Brothels were even found across the street from public schools.

What's Next?

The number of troopers deployed will vary, but their presence is expected to be ongoing. While the governor's office, the NYPD, and the Mayor's office have not yet commented on the deployment, it's clear that a renewed effort is being made to reclaim Roosevelt Avenue and ensure a safer environment for the community.
