NYC's Interim Police Chief: Federal Agents Raided My Homes!

New York City's interim police commissioner, Thomas Donlon, revealed on Saturday that federal authorities had executed search warrants at his homes the previous day. Donlon, who took over the role just a week ago after the resignation of his predecessor, Edward Caban, issued a statement through the police department saying that the authorities took materials that came into his possession approximately 20 years ago and are unrelated to his work with the NYPD.

The statement did not disclose the nature of the investigation, which federal authorities were involved, or what materials were seized. However, the search comes amid a wave of federal law enforcement investigations targeting officials in New York City Mayor Eric Adams' administration.

Just a week before Donlon's homes were searched, Edward Caban resigned as police commissioner after federal authorities seized his electronic devices as part of an investigation that also involved his brother, a former police officer. Federal agents have also recently seized phones from the head of the city's public schools, a top deputy mayor, Adams' top public safety adviser, and others.

Donlon's career includes decades with the FBI, where he worked on terrorism cases including the investigation into the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center, the 1998 bombings of U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, and a 2000 attack on a U.S. Navy destroyer. He was a top counterterrorism official for the FBI in New York approximately 20 years ago.

The FBI and the U.S. Attorney's Office in Manhattan have declined to comment on the searches. It remains unclear if there is any connection between the search involving Donlon and the other investigations.

Despite the ongoing investigations, Adams has maintained that he will not be distracted and will continue to serve the city.
