NYC's India Day Parade Float Sparks Controversy: Ram Mandir Depiction Called 'Anti-Muslim'

NYC's India Day Parade Float Sparks Controversy

A float depicting the controversial Ram Mandir temple in Ayodhya, India, has sparked outrage among several groups who call it "anti-Muslim." The temple was built on the site of a demolished 16th-century mosque, a painful reminder of the 1992 communal violence in India.

The float, part of the upcoming India Day parade in New York City, has been condemned by organizations like the Council on American Islamic Relations, Indian American Muslim Council, and Hindus for Human Rights. They argue that the float glorifies the mosque's destruction and promotes Hindu nationalist ideology over India's secular identity.

The Hindu American Foundation, however, defends the float as an exercise of free speech. The Federation of Indian Associations, the parade organizer, maintains that the float celebrates a significant landmark for Hindus and emphasizes the parade's representation of India's diverse communities.

Mayor Eric Adams' office has stated there's "no room for hate" but that the First Amendment protects the float's display. Despite attending the parade in previous years, the Mayor has announced he will not be attending this year's event.

The India Day parade, celebrating India's independence from British rule, has been held in New York City for over 40 years. This year's parade marks the 42nd anniversary of the event.
