NYC's Iconic WCBS 880 Radio Station Signs Off After Nearly 60 Years

NYC Loses an All-News Radio Giant: WCBS 880 Signs Off After 60 Years
After almost six decades on the air, WCBS 880 AM, a beloved staple of New York City's radio landscape, is saying goodbye. The station, known for its comprehensive news coverage, will be replaced by WHSQ-AM, ESPN New York, starting Monday, August 26. This marks the end of an era for the city's dedicated news listeners, leaving 1010 WINS as the only remaining all-news station in the tri-state area.
Audacy, the station's owner, attributed the decision to the evolving media consumption habits of modern audiences. The company will now focus its resources on 1010 WINS, which has been serving listeners for 70 years and recently expanded its reach by simulcasting on 92.3 FM in 2022.
Chris Oliviero, Audacy's New York market president, acknowledged the tough decision, emphasizing the need to strategically adapt to the changing media landscape. While acknowledging the challenges facing local journalism, he praised WCBS 880's legacy and the dedication of its journalists.
Despite the format change, Audacy will continue to hold the exclusive radio rights to Mets baseball broadcasts.
The end of WCBS 880 marks a significant shift in New York City's radio landscape, signaling the changing tides of news consumption in a digitally driven world.
