NYC's Iconic Outdoor Dining Sheds Facing Demise: New Rules Spark Restaurant Owner Concerns
More than four years after the pandemic changed life in New York City, some of its most recognizable symbols—the outdoor dining structures outside thousands of restaurants—are facing a deadline that could see many of them demolished.
Restaurants offering outdoor dining in sidewalk sheds or roadways and wishing to continue doing so must apply to the city's new outdoor dining program by Saturday night and comply with new guidelines, which some owners say will be costly. Businesses that don't apply must dismantle their existing setups or face fines.
As of Friday afternoon, over 1,900 restaurants had applied to participate in the new program, known as Dining Out N.Y.C. and overseen by the city's Department of Transportation.
This change comes as a blow to many restaurant owners who rely on these outdoor spaces to increase seating capacity and revenue, especially in the post-pandemic era.
The new guidelines are designed to improve safety and accessibility, while also ensuring a more consistent and aesthetically pleasing appearance for outdoor dining across the city. However, some owners argue that the new requirements are too restrictive and expensive, potentially forcing them to abandon outdoor dining altogether.
