NYC's Bold Plan to Tackle the Housing Crisis: Basements and Attics as Homes

New York City Mayor Eric Adams is pushing a new plan to convert basements, attics, and backyard structures into additional housing units, hoping to ease the city's ongoing housing crisis.

The program aims to benefit seniors, particularly those struggling to afford the rising cost of living in the city. Advocates from AARP joined Mayor Adams and his team at City Hall to highlight the benefits of this plan for families caring for aging parents.

The idea is that these converted units could provide families with a separate space for a senior relative, while also generating rental income for homeowners. It's seen as a way to keep families together and prevent them from moving out of state.

To support this initiative, Mayor Adams is increasing funding for the existing pilot program by $4 million, aiming to help homeowners with the conversion process. A new one-stop-shop portal is also being created to streamline applications and make the process easier.

The pilot program currently allows for up to 35 conversions, although construction has yet to begin on any of them. This initiative is part of Mayor Adams' broader goal of creating 500,000 new homes in the next decade and rezoning the city to address the housing crisis.
