NYC Makes History: Paid Prenatal Leave is Now Law!
New York has become the first state in the nation to guarantee paid prenatal leave for pregnant workers. Effective immediately, employers must provide at least 20 hours of paid time off for prenatal appointments.
Key Details of the New Law
- Who's Eligible? All pregnant workers in the private sector are eligible for this paid leave. This includes time for appointments such as physical examinations, end-of-pregnancy care, and fertility treatments.
- Employer Protections: Employers are prohibited from requesting medical information when a worker requests this leave. The prenatal leave is separate from any other paid sick leave an employer may offer.
- Spousal Eligibility: Importantly, spouses of pregnant women are not eligible for this leave.
Governor Hochul's Vision
Governor Kathy Hochul championed this legislation, citing its importance in reducing maternal and infant mortality rates in New York. She stated, "No pregnant woman in New York should be forced to choose between a paycheck and a check-up."
