NYC's Fifth Avenue Turns 200: Block Party & Big Makeover Plans!

Fifth Avenue's Bicentennial Bash!

Fifth Avenue, Manhattan's iconic shopping street, celebrated its 200th anniversary with a massive block party! New Yorkers and tourists alike enjoyed a pedestrian-only paradise, complete with holiday cheer, art installations, and free treats.

Fifth Avenue Block Party

Interim Fifth Avenue Association President Madelyn Wils highlighted the street's rich history and the need for improvement, stating, "Fifth Avenue is the most historic street we have in our city." The event, "You’ve Arrived on Fifth: 200 Years of Icons and Dreams," featured performances by the Juilliard Jazz Duke Ellington Ensemble and the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church Community Choir.

A Future for Fifth Avenue

The success of the car-free celebration fueled support for the Future of Fifth proposal, a planned redesign aiming to prioritize pedestrians. This ambitious plan involves widening sidewalks, shortening crosswalks, and reducing traffic lanes. Mayor Eric Adams supports the project, envisioning a pedestrian-centric Fifth Avenue.

Future of Fifth Plan

The $350 million project is expected to be completed by 2028 and is projected to be self-financing within five years.

A Sweet (and Melted) Ending

The celebration culminated in a cake-cutting ceremony, but the 6-foot-tall birthday cake succumbed to the warm weather, melting before Mayor Adams could partake.

Melted Cake

Despite the cake's unfortunate demise, the event was deemed a resounding success, leaving attendees filled with holiday spirit and optimism for Fifth Avenue's future.
