Social Media Star Peanut the Squirrel Seized by New York Authorities
Peanut, a squirrel with a massive online following, was taken from his New York home by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) on October 30, 2024. His owner, Mark Longo, stated on Peanut's official Instagram account that the squirrel was "taken to be euthanized."
The DEC, in a statement to PEOPLE, said they launched an investigation following reports from the public about Peanut's living conditions and the potential risks associated with keeping wild animals as pets. The investigation is ongoing and additional information will be provided as it becomes available.
Peanut, also known as P'Nut or PNUT, has over 533,000 followers on Instagram and 423,000 on Facebook. He was rescued seven years ago after his mother was hit by a car and became the inspiration behind Longo's P'Nuts Freedom Farm Animal Sanctuary, established in April 2023.
Longo is devastated by the situation, calling it "an absolute tragedy." He has launched a Change.org petition and a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for legal fees and secure Peanut's return.
Peanut's Following Reacts
Fans and followers are expressing shock and outrage on social media, with many questioning the DEC's actions and demanding Peanut's release. The story has sparked a fierce debate about the ethics of keeping wild animals as pets and the role of wildlife authorities in regulating such practices.
