The Upper West Side's iconic Absolute Bagels, known by many as one of the best bagel shops in NYC, has abruptly closed, leaving locals heartbroken and searching for answers.

The Mysterious Closure

The sudden closure, without prior announcement, sparked immediate outrage and speculation. Initial theories pointed to health code violations. A recent health report revealed a shocking 67 points in violations, including evidence of rats and roaches.

However, the building's real-estate broker confirmed the closing came “out of the blue,” adding to the mystery.

A Legacy of Quality and Tradition

Opened in 1992 by Sam Thongkrieng, Absolute Bagels holds a significant place in NYC food history. It was a favorite among locals and critics alike, praised for its perfectly sized bagels, unique elasticity, and the nostalgic feel that harkened back to a bygone era. Many considered it the best, or among the best, bagel shops in the city.

Community Outpouring

The news of the closing caused widespread sadness and disbelief. Longtime patrons shared memories and expressed their sorrow, highlighting the bagel shop's integral role in their lives and the irreplaceable charm of the neighborhood institution. Some even compared it to an event of national importance.

The closure of Absolute Bagels isn't just the loss of a beloved bagel shop; it's a loss for the entire Upper West Side community.
