NYC's Dog Parade: A Sea of Furry Costumes
New York City's annual Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade, a beloved tradition, took place on October 19th, drawing crowds of dog lovers and hundreds of canine costumed-up contestants. The parade, now in its 34th year, has become a staple in the East Village neighborhood, with the dogs marching through the streets, some even vying for prizes for their creative outfits.
This year, the parade saw a wide range of adorable contestants, with pooches dressed as everything from a pizza slice to Austin Powers. The event, initially held at the Tompkins Square Dog Run in Tompkins Square Park, was moved to Avenue A due to ongoing construction.
A Beloved Tradition Faces a Future Uncertain
Despite its popularity, the parade's future is uncertain. Joseph Bourdin, a commercial photographer and volunteer who has been organizing the event since 2020, announced this year will be his last. Bourdin explained that the logistical demands of managing the event, which are becoming increasingly complex, are too overwhelming for one person to handle.
"I need another, bigger entity to take over this beast because it's just too much for a small dog park to handle," Bourdin told Gothamist.
