NYC's 2025 Driving Overhaul: New Laws, Lower Speed Limits & Congestion Pricing!

New York City is gearing up for significant changes to its traffic laws in 2025. These updates impact everything from bus safety to car leasing fees and, of course, the highly anticipated congestion pricing in Manhattan.

Mandatory Seatbelts on Charter Buses

Starting April 21, 2025, all passengers aged 8-16 on charter buses must use seatbelts. This follows a tragic accident and aims to significantly improve passenger safety. Violators face fines up to $50.

Banning Unnecessary Car Lease Fees

Good news for car leasers! From January 1, 2025, administrative, clerical, and handling charges – including those pesky turn-in fees – are banned. This consumer protection aims to make leasing more transparent and affordable.

Speed Limit Reductions

The Department of Transportation (DOT) is lowering speed limits in various locations, prioritizing school zones. They plan to reduce speeds in 250 areas by the end of 2025, aiming for enhanced road safety, particularly in light of Sammy's Law, enacted to honor Sammy Cohen Eckstein.

Infrastructure Improvements: 2024 Recap

Over 2,800 lane miles of highways and more than 3,100 bridges were improved across New York State in 2024, including over 50 lane miles paved and 900 bridge projects in NYC. This massive infrastructure investment aims to upgrade the state's transportation network.

Congestion Pricing: January 5th Launch

While not a new law, the much discussed congestion pricing in Manhattan begins January 5th, 2025. Drivers entering Manhattan below 60th Street will pay a toll ($9 base rate), with variations depending on vehicle type, time of day, and payment method. The revenue will fund improvements to NYC's public transportation.
