NYC Yellow Cabs Cash In on Migrant Surge at US-Canada Border
A surge in illegal crossings at the US-Canada border has created a lucrative opportunity for New York City taxi drivers. These drivers are making the five-hour trip from Plattsburgh, New York, an outpost for migrants who have crossed the border illegally, to New York City, profiting from the desperate situation.
FOX 5 NY investigated the situation at Mountain Mart, a gas station in Plattsburgh, which has become a gathering point for migrants. The station is located 30 miles from the border and is a popular stop for both taxi drivers and charter buses headed to New York City.
One anonymous livery driver told FOX 5 NY that he charges $130-$150 per person to drive migrants to NYC. He explained that many migrants cross the border in groups and that all the drivers are aware of the situation, saying "Every driver, they park the car here. Everybody knows."
The presence of NYC yellow cabs near the border has been acknowledged by officials. Major Nicholas Leon, a chief deputy with the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office, stated, "We're well aware of the yellow cabs. We're aware there is a border operation to pick people up. There's always money to be made."
The reason for the surge in illegal crossings at the US-Canada border is the lack of security in the area. Clinton County, located in Upstate New York, has vast stretches of open border with no fences or barriers, making it easy for migrants to cross undetected. Smugglers are taking advantage of the situation, organizing runs to the border and directing migrants to this easily accessible point.
The story highlights the desperate situation of migrants seeking a better life in the United States. Many migrants are traveling from countries like Venezuela, seeking refuge from hardship and instability. They are willing to risk everything to reach the United States, even if it means crossing the border illegally.
The article also sheds light on the opportunistic nature of some individuals who are profiting from the migrant crisis. The presence of NYC taxi drivers at the border underscores the complex dynamics at play, raising questions about the ethics of profiting from a vulnerable population.
