# NYC Winter Storm: Snow, Sleet, and Ice

New York City experienced a winter storm bringing a mix of freezing rain, snow, and sleet.  Hazardous conditions impacted drivers and pedestrians on Thursday.

## Winter Weather Advisory

A winter weather advisory covered the NYC metro area, extending to northeast New Jersey, Westchester, and southern Connecticut.  **Check for school closings and delays here.**

NYC saw primarily sleet and some snow, while areas north and west received several inches of snow.  Snow and sleet accumulations of up to 3 inches were possible. A glaze of ice was also possible in parts of the metro area.

## Latest Weather Update

**Thursday:** Snow and sleet, transitioning to rain. High near 39°F. 100% chance of precipitation.

Warm air changed the snow to freezing rain or rain.  The storm quickly exited Thursday, leaving dry conditions for Thursday night and Friday.

**Saturday:** 20% chance of snow. High near 36°F.
**Saturday Night:** Snow likely, transitioning to snow and sleet, then rain and sleet. 100% chance of precipitation.
**Sunday:** Chance of rain and snow. High near 40°F. 50% chance of precipitation.

# Suitcase of Human Remains Found in NYC's East River: A Chilling Discovery

On Wednesday evening, NYPD's Harbor Unit made a grim discovery: a suitcase containing human remains in the East River near Governor's Island.  The remains were found around 5:30 p.m. and transported to Pier 16, where EMS declared the individual deceased. 

**Key Details:**

* **Location:** East River, near Governor's Island.
* **Time:** Approximately 5:30 p.m., Wednesday.
* **Condition:** Human remains found inside a suitcase.
* **Identity:** Currently unknown; the medical examiner's office will determine the cause of death and work to identify the victim.
* **Investigation:** Ongoing; police are yet to determine the age and gender of the deceased, but have confirmed they were an adult.

# Brooklyn Bloodbath: 59 Brims Gang Takedown

This week, Brooklyn saw a major crackdown on the notorious **59 Brims** and **Bloodhound Brims** gangs, resulting in a **129-count indictment** against dozens of members.  The investigation, spanning years, uncovered a string of nearly **20 shootings**, some fatal, in Coney Island and Sheepshead Bay.

## The Indictment: A Digital Trail of Violence

The indictment details how the gangs used various methods to communicate their violent intentions, including **music videos**, **recorded jail calls**, and **social media posts**.  Text messages revealed their frustration over missed shots, with one message calling a shooting a "bad drill" because "nobody got hit."

## The 2021 Murder of Davonte Lewis: A Turning Point

The gang's violence escalated significantly after the **2021 murder of 17-year-old Davonte Lewis**, a Bloodhound Brims member, outside his high school. This sparked a years-long gang war.

The indictment also includes details on the alleged murder of drill rapper **Jamel Nicholson** and the injuring of his girlfriend.

## Who are the Bloodhound Brims?

A set of affiliated Bloods, primarily based in Sheepshead Bay and Coney Island.  Some defendants were as young as 15.

## Rival Gangs and the Escalating Violence

The 59 Brims and Bloodhound Brims' rivals include **Folk Nation**, **FNO**, **WOOO**, and **GWAY** (a subset of Gorilla Stone Bloods).  The rivalry intensified after Lewis's murder, leading to numerous shootings.

## How They Were Caught: A Digital Web of Evidence

Authorities used a combination of **music videos**, **jail calls**, **cell phone evidence**, and **social media posts** to build a case against the gang members.  Text messages showed their intent to kill or seriously injure rivals.

The NYPD recovered **18 illegal firearms** in the process.

Several school districts in New York and New Jersey have announced delays for Thursday, February 2nd, due to a winter storm bringing snow, sleet, and ice.  Areas expected to be particularly impacted include inland regions where roads are predicted to be slushy and icy during the morning commute.  Many schools and businesses in Connecticut have also announced closures.

**Tri-State Area Impact:**
A winter weather advisory is in effect for most of the tri-state area (excluding eastern Suffolk County and the immediate Jersey Shore coast). While ice accumulation will likely be less than a tenth of an inch, even a light glaze can significantly impact travel.

**Snow Accumulation:**
Expect around 1 to 2 inches of snow accumulation across much of New Jersey and the Hudson Valley.
