NYC Uses Drones to Warn Flood-Prone Neighborhoods Ahead of Storm
New York City is using drones for the first time to warn people in historically flooded neighborhoods about potential threats from an approaching storm. The city is expecting rainfall rates of 2 inches an hour, raising concerns about potential flooding.
Drones will be deployed in the following neighborhoods:
- Queens: Howard Beach, Rockaways, Ozone Park, Jamaica, and Hollis
- Bronx: Near Bronx River, Throgg’s Neck
- Brooklyn: Coney Island
- Staten Island: New Dorp and Fox Beach
The drones will broadcast critical safety messages until the weather makes it dangerous for them to fly. This new early warning system is a result of the historic flooding caused by Hurricane Ida in 2021.

The drones, typically used for beach surveillance, will be operated in partnership with the NYPD. However, the exact time and locations of the broadcasts are yet to be determined.
