NYC Under Severe Thunderstorm Watch: Flash Flooding Hits Connecticut, Warnings Extend to Washington D.C.
Severe Storms Batter NYC, Connecticut Flooded, Washington D.C. on Watch
Severe thunderstorms are sweeping across the Northeast and mid-Atlantic states, bringing damaging wind gusts, large hail, and significant flooding. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect along the Interstate 95 corridor, stretching from New York City all the way to Washington D.C., until 10 p.m. ET Sunday.
Connecticut is particularly hard hit, with heavy rainfall causing widespread flash flooding. Cities like Stamford and Danbury are experiencing road closures and water rescues, with reports of a mudslide in Danbury even causing a gas leak and evacuations.
The National Weather Service issued a Flash Flood Emergency for central Fairfield and northern New Haven counties in Connecticut, where rainfall rates reached 2-3 inches per hour on top of 4-8 inches already accumulated since Sunday morning.
While the storms are expected to subside by late Sunday evening, a new round of severe weather is predicted for Monday in many of the same areas.
Stay informed and be prepared for potential hazards, including:
- Flash flooding: Be aware of potential flooding in low-lying areas and avoid driving through flooded roads.
- High winds: Secure loose objects and be cautious of falling trees and branches.
- Hail: Protect your vehicles and property from potential hail damage.
