NYC to Transform Park Avenue: A Greener, Pedestrian-Friendly Oasis in Midtown East
Mayor Eric Adams and the NYC Department of Transportation have announced plans to redesign Park Avenue between East 46th and East 57th Streets in Midtown East, Manhattan. The project aims to create a more pedestrian-friendly space, adding greenery, seating, concessions, and safer crossings.

Once the MTA completes its work, the city will expand the median along Park Avenue, incorporating landscaping, seating, cycling lanes, and pedestrian walkways.
Funding for this project will come from the East Midtown Governing Group, established by the 2017 Greater East Midtown Rezoning. This rezoning mandates new office developments and the sale of development rights to contribute to public realm improvements.
This Park Avenue redesign is part of a larger initiative to create a network of public spaces in Midtown, as recommended by the βNewβ New York Panel to revive the city's economy. Other projects include:
- The expansion of the Broadway Vision Plan
- The Fifth Avenue redesign
- The opening of Plaza33 at Penn Station
