NYC to See Pro-Palestinian Protests and Vigils on Anniversary of Hamas Attack

NYC Braces for Tensions on Anniversary of Hamas Attack
One year after the devastating Hamas attack on October 7th, 2023, New York City is preparing for a day filled with both remembrance and protest.
Vigils and Protests:
A vigil to honor those killed and missing in the attack will be held in Central Park, blocks away from a planned pro-Palestinian march through Manhattan. NYPD officials are working to keep the groups separate, anticipating a tense atmosphere.
CUNY and City School Walkouts:
Students and faculty from CUNY and city public schools are expected to participate in walkouts and join the larger protest gathering at Washington Square Park. The pro-Palestinian march will then head north.
Graffiti and Security Measures:
Incidents of vandalism, including graffiti and smashed windows, were reported on the CUNY campus. Security measures have been increased at Columbia University, limiting access to ID holders only.
Remembering the Victims:
The Central Park vigil will feature candle lighting, music, and prayer. Politicians, families of hostages, and others are expected to attend. The event will serve as a solemn remembrance of those who lost their lives in the attack.
A Day of Reflection and Action:
The events planned for October 7th in New York City will be a complex mix of remembrance, protest, and calls for action. As the city reflects on the past year, the future of peace in the region remains a critical concern.
