NYC to Close 13 Migrant Shelters by Summer 2025: Adams' Bold Plan
Mayor Eric Adams announced that New York City will be closing 13 migrant shelters by June 2025, impacting approximately 10,000 beds. This is part of a larger effort to reduce the city's reliance on emergency shelters as the number of migrants housed in NYC shelters has been decreasing for 27 consecutive weeks.
Shelters Set for Closure
The list of shelters slated for closure includes:
- BK Way, Brooklyn
- Hall Street Humanitarian Emergency Response and Relief Center, Brooklyn
- Holiday Inn Express, Brooklyn
- The VYBE BK, Brooklyn
- 99 Washington Humanitarian Emergency Response and Relief Center, Manhattan
- The Stewart Humanitarian Emergency Response and Relief Center, Manhattan
- The Watson Humanitarian Emergency Response and Relief Center, Manhattan
- Hotel Nedia, Queens
- Holiday Inn/Staten Island Inn, Staten Island
- Ramada, Yonkers
The city is still finalizing the closure of three additional facilities.
A Decrease in Migrant Numbers
This closure announcement follows the December announcement of 25 other migrant shelters closing by March, including the Floyd Bennett Field complex and Randall's Island shelter. Mayor Adams emphasized that 78% of asylum seekers who stayed in city shelters have since left. A new facility for single adult men will open on Bruckner Boulevard in the Bronx to accommodate those from Randall's Island upon its closure.
Mayor Adams stated, "You don't come to America to live in a shelter. You don't come to America to raise your children in a shelter." The city expects that by June, over 20% of the emergency sites opened in response to the asylum seeker crisis will have been closed.
