NYC Thanksgiving Parade: Rain, Protests, and a $680M Arms Sale?

NYC Thanksgiving Parade 2024: A Day of Rain, Protests, and Giant Balloons

This year's Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in NYC was a mix of the usual festive cheer and some unexpected disruptions. Torrential rain dampened the festivities, but that wasn't the only challenge.

For the second year in a row, pro-Palestinian protestors interrupted the parade, unfurling a banner reading "Don't celebrate genocide! Arms embargo now. Free Palestine!" Their demonstration aimed to highlight the devastating human cost of the ongoing conflict in Gaza, where at least 44,330 Palestinians have tragically lost their lives. The protestors briefly blocked the Ronald McDonald balloon, a target due to McDonald's Israeli franchise offering free meals to Israeli military personnel.

Twenty-one protestors were arrested following the demonstration. This comes amid reports of a planned $680 million arms sale to Israel by the US, further fueling the protesters' calls for an end to arms supplies to the region.

Despite the protest, the parade continued, showcasing beloved cartoon balloons like Bluey and Minnie Mouse's debut, along with Broadway stars Idina Menzel and Billy Porter. The parade featured 22 large balloons and 34 floats, drawing a record-breaking 28.5 million viewers last year.

This year's parade serves as a reminder of the complex political climate even amidst the traditional Thanksgiving celebration.
