NYC Teens Awarded $10,000 for Subway Heroism: How They Helped Catch a Killer
NYC Teens Awarded $10,000 for Subway Heroism
Three Brooklyn teenagers are being hailed as heroes after their quick thinking led to the arrest of Sebastian Zapeta, the man accused of setting 57-year-old Debrina Kawam on fire on an F train in December. Kawam tragically died from her injuries.
The teens, who remain unnamed for their safety, witnessed the crime and immediately called 911, providing crucial information that led to Zapeta's apprehension. Zapeta has since been charged with murder.
Initially, there was concern the teens wouldn't receive the standard $10,000 Crime Stoppers reward because they contacted 911 directly instead of the tip line. However, former MTA chair Peter S. Kalikow and NYC Councilmember Susan Zhuang intervened, ensuring the teens received the reward and additional gifts. Each teen will receive their share of the $10,000 reward and a Nintendo Switch.
One teen described the experience, saying, "I'm being called a hero. That's crazy. I just did it solely because it's the right thing to do."
This incident highlights the bravery of these young New Yorkers and underscores the importance of community vigilance in keeping our city safe.
