NYC Teacher Shot by Stray Bullet in Classroom on Eve of School Year

On the eve of the first day of school, a New York City teacher was shot in the hand by a stray bullet that flew through the window of his sixth-floor classroom. The incident occurred at M.S. 391 in the Bronx borough shortly before noon on Wednesday, September 4th.

According to police, the bullet is believed to have been fired from an elevated surface a long distance away. The teacher, a 33-year-old man, suffered a graze wound to his right hand and was transported to a local hospital in stable condition. He has since been released.

The NYC Department of Education released a statement calling the incident "an egregious display of violence" and vowed to provide support to the school community. Additional school safety agents and police officers will be present at the middle school for the first day of school on Thursday "out of an abundance of caution."

Police are investigating the incident and working to determine the source of the bullet and who fired it. They are searching nearby rooftops for ballistic evidence and video footage.

Thankfully, no students were present at the school at the time of the shooting, as school was not scheduled to begin until Thursday.
