Riders' Voices: Fear and Uncertainty

Several riders shared their experiences with Fox News Digital, highlighting a growing sense of insecurity. One rider stated that crimes, once confined to late nights, now occur at any hour. Another mentioned the impact of homelessness and a recent horrific incident where a woman was set on fire on a train. These events have created a climate of fear, significantly impacting some riders' daily routines, including their ability to pursue education.

Blame and Responses

Some attribute the rise in subway crime to an influx of people into the city and progressive crime policies. Criticism has been directed at Governor Kathy Hochul for her handling of prison and bail reforms. MTA chairman Janno Lieber, however, downplayed the severity of the issue, claiming the fear of crime is largely a perception.

Despite the concerns, some riders, particularly those in Manhattan, feel relatively safe, emphasizing the importance of personal vigilance while using the subway.

Official Responses and Criticisms

While overall subway crime is down slightly according to NYPD data, felony assaults increased, and homicides doubled in 2024 compared to 2023. This has prompted strong criticism from figures like Curtis Sliwa, founder of the Guardian Angels, who called the politicians' handling of the situation a "slap in the face" to New Yorkers.
