Passengers reported a chaotic evacuation involving firefighters and emergency exits, with at least one person requiring hospitalization.
Governor Hochul Demands Action
Governor Kathy Hochul deemed the situation "unacceptable" and demanded a full review by the MTA and Con Edison to determine the cause and prevent future incidents. She emphasized the need for improved infrastructure maintenance and investments to avoid similar crises.
"New Yorkers deserve a world-class subway system...No one deserves to be trapped underground for two hours," Hochul stated.
MTA officials attributed the outage to a malfunctioning, 90-year-old electrical substation. While commending the efforts of some MTA conductors, officials acknowledged the urgent need for system upgrades.
Service was eventually restored around midnight, and repairs are ongoing. For the latest updates, visit new.mta.info.
