Hochul announces increased subway safety measures">This $77 million, six-month plan aims to address the high crime rates during overnight hours. A total of 750 additional officers will patrol platforms and stations, with an additional 300 dedicated to overnight trains. The initiative also focuses on 30 stations that account for 50% of subway crime, prioritizing increased enforcement in those areas.
Beyond Policing: A Multi-pronged Approach
The plan is part of a larger five-point initiative. Other key elements include:
- Improved lighting and platform barriers: Enhancing visibility and physical security.
- Crackdown on fare evasion: Implementing new, modern gates to deter fare evasion.
- Expanded homeless outreach: Providing support at end-of-line stations.
- Mental health care: Getting individuals with serious mental illnesses off the subway system and into appropriate care.
Mayor Eric Adams expressed strong support for the plan, emphasizing the importance of a visible police presence to reassure passengers.
The NYPD will roll out the initiative in phases. Phase 1 started on January 20, 2025, with 100 officers, with full deployment anticipated by the end of the month.
This comprehensive approach combines enhanced law enforcement with social services to improve safety and create a more secure environment for subway riders.
