NYC Subway Tries Out Fancy Scents: A $2,000 Experiment
The MTA is testing out expensive new scent diffusers in two NYC subway stations: Grand Avenue-Newtown in Elmhurst and Rockaway Avenue in Bed-Stuy. These devices, costing up to $2,200 each, aim to improve the "station environment".
The initiative has sparked mixed reactions. While some riders appreciate the "fresh scent", many others on social media find the idea absurd, given the existing challenges in the subway system. Some comments on Reddit describe the new scent as being oddly mixed with the usual subway smells.
An MTA spokesperson claims the feedback has been "overwhelmingly positive", but the high cost of the diffusers raises concerns. Many question why the money wasn't used for other improvements.
One rider described the scent as "baby powdery", capable of masking other odors but not on the platform. Others find it a welcome change.
The stations involved have previously dealt with issues of homelessness and violence, highlighting the broader context of the MTA's efforts to improve the rider experience.
This initiative follows the MTA's plan to spend up to $1 million on studying fare evaders, which has also drawn criticism.
