NYC Subway Attacks Surge: Straphangers on Edge Despite NYPD Increase

Despite deploying hundreds of additional officers, the NYPD is struggling to curb a recent spike in subway violence. At least seven attacks, including slashings, shovings, and beatings, have been reported in just one week, leaving New Yorkers feeling increasingly unsafe.

"It’s just the way of life now in New York, it’s just terrible," said the mother of a recent subway attack victim. "You never know what could happen. I just tell him, now you have to be vigilant."

Key Incidents:

• January 21: A 39-year-old was slashed and punched on a D train in Brooklyn.
• January 25: A 66-year-old woman was attacked with a golf club in the Financial District. • January 27: A 23-year-old woman was shoved onto the tracks of a moving train at the 175th Street station in Manhattan. While NYPD data shows an overall decrease in transit crime, misdemeanor assaults are up significantly. This discrepancy highlights the growing fear among city residents despite the increased police presence in the subway system.
