NYC Students Plan Pro-Palestinian Walkouts on Anniversary of Israel-Gaza War

NYC Students to Walk Out on Anniversary of Israel-Gaza War

Students from over a dozen colleges in NYC are planning a walkout on Monday, October 7th, to mark the anniversary of Hamas' surprise attack on Israel. The walkout will coincide with larger protests organized by the pro-Palestinian group Within Our Lifetime.

The protests come as the anniversary of the conflict approaches, with the city bracing for a day of demonstrations. The October 7th, 2023, attack by Hamas resulted in the deaths of over 1,200 people in Israel, most of whom were civilians. In retaliation, Israel launched an invasion of Gaza, leading to the deaths of over 40,000 Palestinians, over half of whom were women and children.

Security Concerns & Campus Responses

CUNY officials have stated that they are working closely with law enforcement to ensure the safety of students during the protests. Additional security personnel will be deployed to campuses, and students are expected to express themselves responsibly and respectfully.

Columbia University, which faced criticism for its handling of pro-Palestinian protests earlier this year, has also taken steps to manage the situation. The university's interim president, Katrina Armstrong, has urged for an atmosphere of respect and support, recognizing the diverse and often differing experiences of the university community.

Mayor Adams' Statement & Increased Security

Mayor Adams has acknowledged the significance of the anniversary for the city, particularly for the Jewish community. He has pledged to protect the right to peaceful protest while also stating that violence or property destruction will not be tolerated.

In light of the anniversary and recent events in the Middle East, including a missile attack by Iran on Israel, the NYPD has implemented additional security measures. These include increased camera deployments, the deployment of K-9 units, and the presence of heavily armed police units in sensitive locations, including synagogues, foreign consulates, Times Square, and Central Park.

The NYPD has also increased communication with overseas liaisons and is monitoring social media for any potential threats.

Protests & Campus Dynamics

Students involved in the walkout plan to gather in Washington Square Park before joining the larger protests. Columbia University students will leave class a few hours before the main protest and head to the steps of Low Library.

The walkouts and protests reflect the ongoing tensions and complex emotions surrounding the Israel-Gaza conflict. These events highlight the importance of navigating these complex issues with sensitivity and respect for all perspectives.
