NYC Street Vendors Demand Fair Licensing: Rally Calls for New Bills to Ease Regulations

NYC Street Vendors Fight for Fair Regulations: A City Hall Rally Demands Change

Hundreds of street vendors gathered at City Hall on Thursday, demanding action from the New York City Council to make it easier for them to obtain licenses and operate legally. The vendors are calling for a "Street Vendor Reform Platform", a package of bills aimed at creating a more predictable and regulated system for these small businesses.

The reform package focuses on four key areas:

  • Ensuring vendor access to business licensing: The vendors argue that the current licensing process is too restrictive and prevents many from operating legally.
  • Reducing criminal liability for general and mobile food vendors: The proposed bills seek to reduce the risk of criminal charges for vendors who are simply trying to make a living.
  • Creating a division of street vendor assistance within NYC small business services: This would provide dedicated support and resources for street vendors.
  • Reforming public siting: The package aims to establish fairer and more transparent rules for where vendors can operate.

The vendors argue that the current situation is unfair and unsustainable. Despite the passage of Local Law 18 in 2021, which introduced over 4,450 new mobile food vendor permits, only 127 have been issued so far. At the same time, enforcement against vendors has increased citywide.

With nearly 20,000 street vendors in NYC, they see these bills as a crucial step towards creating a more equitable and prosperous environment for their businesses. The New York City Independent Budget Office believes that passing the reform package could generate $17 million in revenue for the city.

The rally is a clear signal that street vendors are ready to fight for their rights and opportunities. It remains to be seen whether the City Council will take action on these crucial reforms.
