NYC Sheriff Under Investigation for Pay-to-Play Scheme: What We Know

NYC Sheriff Anthony Miranda Under Investigation for Pay-to-Play Scheme
New York City Sheriff Anthony Miranda is facing a Department of Investigation probe into allegations of a pay-to-play scheme involving the National Latino Officers Association (NLOA), a law enforcement organization he chairs. Sources claim that Miranda solicited donations for the NLOA in exchange for overlooking certain law enforcement issues.

The investigation follows complaints filed against Miranda and comes amidst a series of federal inquiries targeting Mayor Eric Adams' administration.
Additional Investigation into Cash Seizures
The DOI is also investigating the Sheriff's Office for potentially improper cash seizures during raids of unlicensed cannabis shops. Miranda claims the NYPD is responsible for vouchering seized property, but union officials dispute his statements, claiming deputy sheriffs were still asked to voucher cash and products.
A Web of Investigations
These probes add to a growing list of investigations into Mayor Adams and his inner circle. Federal authorities have been looking into his campaign’s ties to Turkey, as well as investigations involving top City Hall and NYPD officials, some leading to home raids.
Miranda’s appointment as Sheriff in May 2022, a position chosen by Mayor Adams, adds another layer of scrutiny to the ongoing investigations surrounding the administration.
