NYC Schools: Cell Phone Ban and More
New York City's public schools welcomed nearly a million students back this year, with significant changes. A statewide cell phone ban is now in effect, prohibiting cell phones on school grounds throughout the school day. While exemptions exist for certain students, schools are tasked with creating storage solutions and communication plans for parents.
<br>New Schools & Class Size Reduction
Seven new schools opened their doors, including the HBCU Early College Prep High School, visited by Mayor Eric Adams and Schools Chancellor Melissa Aviles-Ramos. The city is also working to reduce class sizes, aiming for a 2028 deadline. Currently, 60% of classes meet the state-mandated size limits, necessitating the hiring of thousands of additional teachers.
<br>Enhanced School Safety Measures
School safety is a top priority, with NYPD deploying hundreds of officers to patrol school corridors and surrounding areas to ensure student safety. Increased police presence aims to provide reassurance and a safe environment for students before, during, and after school.
