NYC Sanctuary City Policy Under Fire: Over 58,000 Migrant Criminals Roam the Streets?

NYC Sanctuary City Policy Questioned Amidst Criminal Migrant Surge

New data reveals over 58,000 illegal migrants in NYC have criminal records or pending charges, including over 1,000 suspected gang members. This startling statistic is raising serious questions about the city's sanctuary city policies.

The Numbers are Alarming

ICE data shows that out of the approximately 759,218 illegal border crossers in NYC (as of Nov. 17), a staggering 7.7% (58,626) have criminal convictions or pending cases. Nearly 2% of those with criminal records are suspected or known gang members.

Councilman Robert Holden criticized sanctuary city laws, stating they endanger New Yorkers by protecting criminals instead of citizens. Nationally, the numbers are equally concerning, with 8.6% of the nearly 7.8 million illegal immigrants in the US having criminal records or pending charges.

Kenneth Genalo, head of ICE's NYC office, expressed frustration over sanctuary laws hindering deportation efforts and called for additional resources.

Consequences and Criticisms

Council Minority Leader Joe Borelli expressed shock and dismay, blaming the Biden administration's border policies and holding the Democratic Party accountable. The death of Georgia nursing student Laken Riley, allegedly murdered by a previously released migrant, further fuels criticism of the sanctuary city policies.

Legislation to repeal these laws, sponsored by Holden and Borelli, stalled due to opposition from the City Council's majority.

Mayor Eric Adams, while advocating for changes to allow cooperation with ICE for migrants suspected of serious crimes, claims he lacks the political support. Holden disputes this, blaming City Hall for inaction.

The debate continues over the balance between protecting migrants and ensuring public safety in NYC.
