NYC Restaurant Inspections on the Decline: Here's Why
New York City's health department has reported a significant decrease in restaurant inspections, dropping by 17% from the previous fiscal year. This means fewer restaurants are being checked for cleanliness, potential rodent infestations, and other health code violations.
The city's health department attributes this decline to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, stating that staff had to focus on emergency response efforts. However, they are committed to increasing inspections, hiring and training additional staff, and providing food safety workshops to help restaurant owners maintain the highest standards.
What do NYC restaurant letter grades mean?
- A: Minimal or no violations.
- B: Minor violations.
- C: Numerous or risky violations.
Restaurants displaying a "grade pending" sign are working to fix violations to achieve a better grade.
City council member Erik Bottcher emphasizes the importance of frequent inspections, stating, "They want that inspector to come back promptly so they can get a better letter grade up on the window, so it's for our restaurant owners and proprietors, it's for consumers. It's so important that these inspections increase quickly."
While restaurants strive for better grades, city leaders are focusing on improving the overall report card by increasing the frequency of inspections.
