NYC Recovers from Debby's Remnants: Hundreds of Trees Down, Power Outages
New York City spent Saturday cleaning up the aftermath of the remnants of Tropical Storm Debby. The city's Parks Department reported over 500 downed trees citywide, with Queens experiencing the highest number of service requests at 216.
Trees Down, Wires Down, and a Close Call
In the Corona section of Queens, crews worked to clear debris and downed trees, highlighting the domino effect of damage caused by the storm. Residents like Bob Massano, who had been living in the area for 50 years, said they had never seen such intense winds on their block.
Massano, concerned about potentially dangerous live wires, contacted Con Edison but received automated responses that were unhelpful. Con Edison urged residents to stay away from downed wires, treat them as live, and call 911.
Neighbor William Narvaez recounted a harrowing close call. He had saved a man sleeping on the sidewalk moments before a rotting tree fell, narrowly avoiding tragedy.
Power Outages Across the City
Con Edison reported 4,200 power outages citywide since Friday, with most restored by Saturday. At its peak, the storm knocked out power to 14,000 Con Ed customers in Westchester County, and the utility estimated to have power restored for 95% of customers by midnight.
Major outages continued for JCP&L, with 2,500 customers still impacted, while PSEG Long Island reported just over 100 customers without power.
