NYC Rapper Ka, Firefighter, and Wordsmith, Passes Away at 52

Kaseem 'Ka' Ryan, a renowned New York City rapper and producer, has died at the age of 52. Known for his introspective and conceptual lyrics, Ka channeled his personal struggles and emotions into his music. He balanced his music career with his service as a captain in the New York City Fire Department, where he was a first responder during the 9/11 attacks.

Ka's wife, film producer Mimi Valdés, confirmed the news on Instagram. "My king, my hero, my best friend," she wrote, adding, "You will always be my everything because love like ours lasts forever. Rest my beautiful husband, see you on the other side."

Ka self-released 11 solo albums, including the critically acclaimed Honor Killed the Samurai (2016). He also collaborated with other prominent artists like GZA and Roc Marciano. His music was a form of therapy for him, allowing him to express himself and purge his emotions, as he described it in a 2016 interview.

Ka's career was marked by independence. He created his own record label, Iron Works, and took charge of promoting his music and selling his merchandise. His most recent album, The Thief Next to Jesus, was released in August.

Tributes poured in from fellow artists and fans alike. Roc Marciano wrote a heartfelt Instagram post, remembering Ka as a "giver" and a "big part" of his development as a man. He expressed gratitude for Ka's friendship and mentorship, fondly recalling their conversations about basketball and how Ka could make his son laugh.

Ka's legacy will live on through his music and his unwavering commitment to his community. He was a true artist, a dedicated firefighter, and a beloved figure in the New York City music scene.
