NYC Police Battle Venezuelan Gangs Recruiting Children from Migrant Families
NYPD Cracking Down on Venezuelan Gang Recruitment in NYC Migrant Shelters
There's a growing concern in New York City about the increasing activity of Venezuelan gangs, particularly their recruitment of children from migrant families residing in shelters. The NYPD is focusing its efforts on the Tren de Aragua gang and its subgroup, the "Little Devils of 42nd Street," which are actively recruiting vulnerable youth.
The Threat of Tren de Aragua
The Tren de Aragua gang poses a significant challenge due to its members' ability to blend into the asylum-seeking population. They lack criminal records, frequently change identities, and commit crimes ranging from retail robberies and scooter thefts to armed assaults on police officers. These crimes are increasing significantly with over 800 incidents this year alone.
The NYPD's Chief of Detectives, Joseph Kenny, highlights the difficulty in tracking these criminals due to the lack of fingerprints, photographs, and prior criminal histories.
Fear Among Migrant Families
Migrant parents express fear for their children's safety. One mother, Airada Pereira, shared her concerns about her 11-year-old son being targeted and coerced into gang activity. She actively tries to keep him safe by staying with him and warning him of the dangers.
Community Efforts to Counter Gang Influence
Organizations like Resources Opportunities Connections and Community (ROCC) are working to provide alternative activities for migrant children. Their programs, such as a soccer club, aim to create a sense of belonging and keep kids off the streets and away from gang influence.
Challenges and Solutions
The sheer number of migrant children in city shelters (nearly 22,000, representing 38% of the migrant population) underscores the need for increased resources and programs to support these vulnerable youth. The lack of programs makes them easy targets for gangs. The NYPD is collaborating with federal partners to address gang violence and support migrant communities who often hesitate to report crimes due to fear of deportation.
It is important to remember that only a small percentage of the migrant population is involved in criminal activity. The majority are victims of these gangs.
