NYC Parks Gets Dedicated Pizza Bins to Combat Litter and Pizza Rat

NYC Parks is tackling the age-old problem of pizza boxes in parks with a dedicated trash can solution. These specially designed rectangular bins will be available in five parks throughout the city by Labor Day weekend, offering a convenient way to dispose of empty pizza boxes without stuffing them into standard circular bins.

The initiative aims to reduce trash overflow, minimize food sources for pesky rodents, and encourage recycling. Each borough will have at least one park with these new bins, which feature a classic red-and-white checkered design reminiscent of traditional New York pizza joints.

Which Parks Will Have the Pizza Bins?

Here's a list of the five lucky parks getting their own dedicated pizza box bins:

• Loreto Playground, Bronx
• Saratoga Park, Brooklyn
• Father Demo Square, Manhattan
• Sobelsohn Playground, Queens
• Jennifer's Playground, Staten Island

The initiative follows a successful pilot program in Central Park, where the bins resulted in fewer jammed trash cans, less surrounding litter, and increased cardboard recycling. NYC Parks is excited to see how New Yorkers will utilize the new bins, with future expansion to other parks potentially on the horizon.

A Blow to Pizza Rat?

Deputy Mayor for Operations Meera Joshi even took a jab at the infamous Pizza Rat, declaring, “Pizza Rat will find no quarter in city parks soon enough, thanks to these pizza-ready trash cans.” This initiative is just one example of the Adams administration's efforts to improve quality of life for New Yorkers by tackling issues like litter and pests.

This pizza bin program is another step toward a cleaner and more organized NYC. Whether you're enjoying a slice of pizza in the park, or simply strolling through, these new bins will ensure a more pleasant experience for everyone.
