NYC's Floyd Bennett Field Migrant Shelter Closing in March 2025
New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced the closure of the migrant shelter at Floyd Bennett Field, scheduled for March 10, 2025. The city will terminate its lease with the site, and migrants will be relocated by mid-January.
Mayor Adams attributed the closure to successful management strategies, stating the city is handling the migrant crisis better than any other in the nation. The decision comes before Donald Trump's upcoming presidency, preventing potential lease revocation or raids on the facility, currently housing nearly 2,000 migrants.
Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis linked the closure to the impact of President Trump's agenda, highlighting the efforts undertaken to achieve the shelter's closure. While advocates welcome the closure, they acknowledge the disruption it will cause and express concerns about the previous location's suitability.
This is one of 25 shelters set to close by March. Mayor Adams plans to meet with President-elect Trump's incoming border czar to discuss the matter further. The migrant shelter at Randalls Island is also slated to close on February 28th.
